KORRIDOR /
A CORRIDOR FOR ART
THE INITIAL SITUATION
The 160 metre long cycle and pedestrian subway at Ostbahnhof was a dismal and unkempt infrastructure with offensive and sometimes racist graffiti on the walls. With a public survey and active contact with various associations, we included various perspectives from local residents and marginalised groups, with most responses pointing to a negative feeling when using the tunnel. We incorporated suggestions for improvement and requests, such as concerns about lighting and wall design through to the installation of rubbish bins, into our concept. So our plan was born: to use art and infrastructural measures to transform a fearful space into a lively, more appealing place that all visitors would prefer to use in the long term.
THE METAMORPHOSIS BEGINS
After three years of research, bureaucratic work, fundraising and creative preparations, the time had finally come: the participatory project to redesign the tunnel began in July 2023. Over the course of four weeks, many hands scrubbed and painted in this tunnel. Despite a variety of obstacles, such as broken machines, rainy storms and physical strain, the remodelling was a fun and collaborative affair with a total of around 50 helpers.
THE NEW ART CORRIDOR
The following themes were important to us in the creative design: The colour pink acts as a recognition feature and navigation from the respective streets into the tunnel to encourage use of the tunnel. This is because it is based on the many-eyes principle, which can create a greater sense of safety with increased use. With anamorphic shapes at the entrances and the spirals running through the tunnel arch, we play with perspective and change the perception of the space. Dynamic but reduced forms are there to naturally slow down bicycle traffic and break up the length of the tunnel.
In order to maintain our concept in the long term and revitalise the site, the tunnel is protected by graffiti and we plan to exhibit works by artists every three to six months on the eight frames.
